Comments from the judges
Janine Mackintosh Habitat sweet habitat (beetle chewed Eucalyptus diversifolia, thread)
‘Janine Mackintosh has established over many years a deep relationship with the biodiversity of Kangaroo Island. Her delicate and diligently crafted works honour the subtle shifts and transformations of place while alluding to the complexity of the interconnectedness of life forms. In this way she perhaps collaborates with the beetles that feed on the leaves of the Eucalyptus diversifolia. This is a consummate work of meditation and love.’
Kyle Armstrong Slippery slope (enamel paint, 23K gold leaf on glass)
‘Reverse painting on glass was introduced to Japan from China in the Edo period from the 17th to the 19th centuries, it also flourished in Indian art in the mid-19th century and was used for religious works in medieval Europe. Armstrong has incorporated this long tradition to harness the reduced palette of minimalism and the constraints of abstraction. This work certainly aligns with the thematic of ‘On the Edge’ for the inaugural Diana Keir Art Award.’
Deb Sleeman, Janine Mackintosh, Ria Byass and Dave Foreman Act of Sorrow #1 (material, rope, video, photograph)
‘This collaborative artistic team has created a fascinating work that honours the particular and dramatic landscape of Kangaroo Island. Created in 2019 on the 50th anniversary of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s hugely influential ‘Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet’ Little Bay, Sydney, Australia, 1968-1969, this beautifully documented performative work is both a homage to the potency of artists who have gone before, and an urgent reminder of the fragile value of our natural world.’
